Indoor Environmental Quality

One of the highest priorities for many buyers of new homes is a healthier indoor environment, so knowledgeable builders, remodelers and designers can often reap extra profits or establish a market niche by producing homes with improved indoor environmental quality. Building industry professionals who do not follow sound indoor environmental quality practices run the potential risk of costly callbacks and, in worst case scenarios, possible legal action. This module covers indoor environmental quality strategies such as the reduction or elimination of potential sources of pollutants, control of pollutants, filtration of pollutants and mitigation of radon.

By completing this module, you will be able to:

  • Describe ways to reduce or eliminate pollutant sources to improve the indoor environmental quality of a home.
  • Describe ways to control pollutants to achieve indoor environmental quality.
  • Explain the optimal means to filtrate pollutants from indoor environments.
  • Explain radon testing options and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-recommended foundation design and construction methods that facilitate post-construction radon removal or entry reduction.
  • List mandatory and innovative indoor environmental quality practices acknowledged in the ICC/ASHRAE 700-2015 National Green Building Standard™ (NGBS).
