Resource Efficiency

  • Registration Closed

While housing is a key element in the nation’s economy, it is also an enormous consumer of materials and resources. Every year these resources are consumed for new home construction as well as to repair and remodel existing homes. According to a report from the Department of Wood Science and Forest Products at Virginia Tech and the USDA Forest Service Southern Research Station, the average 2,000-square-foot home generates 1,500 to 3,700 pounds of solid wood waste and 1,000 to 1,800 pounds of engineered wood waste. Of this waste, three of the components — cardboard, wood and drywall — consistently account for 60 to 80%of the total on most job sites. These are fully recyclable materials. This module will discuss smart material selection, to reduce waste and help ensure that components last longer.

By completing this module, you will be able to:

  • Describe effective approaches to achieving reduced material quantity for improved resource efficiency.
  • Describe practices that enhance the durability of materials and reduce maintenance.
  • Describe materials and methods that leverage sustainable properties and reduce demand on finite resources.
  • List mandatory and several innovative resource efficiency practices acknowledged in the ICC/ASHRAE 700-2015 National Green Building Standard™ (NGBS).
