In this webinar, learn about additions to the 2021 International Building Code that allow for larger and taller wood buildings. You’ll get an overview of new design and construction considerations for midrise mass timber housing within the context of streamlined project delivery and how they support urban density and more sustainable communities. Variables will include allowable increases, acoustics, and fire-rated assemblies.

Participants in this webinar will:

  • Discover how midrise wood‐frame construction meets housing needs while supporting well designed urban growth.
  • Identify the construction types, building metrics and fire resistance/protection requirements for timber midrise buildings per the 2021 International Building Code.
  • Understand the schedule and cost implications of mass timber structures as supplemented by prefabricated assemblies.

As president of Katerra Architecture, Craig oversees new building platforms while ensuring they meet and exceed sustainability goals. •He was a partner with The Miller Hull Partnership for 30 years. Projects included the Bullitt Center, the world’s first commercial office building to meet the stringent requirements of the Living Building Challenge, and the $450m replacement of the San Ysidro Land Port of Entry, the busiest border crossing in the world. Integrated design approach: relying heavily on his team of architects, engineers, and contractors to solve complicated problems simply, creatively and elegantly, together. 

Chester Weir

Design Lead

Chester Weir leads design efforts at Katerra for the Mass Timber Component Design Group, developing scalable solutions for mid and high-rise multi-family and commercial projects. His work is focused on the opportunities afforded by tall timber building codes, which have been pro-actively adopted in the Pacific Northwest where he works. Based in Seattle for over 15 years, Chester has worked for generalist design practices, contributing to civic, institutional, performing arts, and mixed-use projects.
