  • Visitability Design Starts at the Curb

    Contains 1 Component(s) Recorded On: 07/18/2018

Many people are familiar with the terms “aging in place” or “universal design,” but “visitability” may be a newer concept. Essentially, visitability says that anyone — occupants as well as people coming to a home for any purpose — should be able to gain access to the home and move within it easily. While classic visitability focuses on the inside of the home, this webinar begins at the street. If someone cannot get to the front door easily, then getting inside doesn’t matter as much. Specifically, presenter Steve Hoffacker will discuss sidewalks, driveways, porches, entry doors, lighting and other safety issues. Photo Credit: 2016 Best Universal Design Home for 55+ New Construction, Gold, New Idea Home. Photographer: Philip Wegener

As long as people are able-bodied, they can enter most homes. However, for people not fitting this description, most walkways, yards, driveways or planting areas offer challenges in even getting to the front door. That’s the whole point of visitability — creating a home that accommodates nearly everyone who might want to enter and move about within the home whether they live there, visit often, or are just a casual guest. The classic definition of visitability focuses on use of the home once inside, but it begins long before that — at the street. Builders, contractors, architects and designers need to create a flow that allows people and their guests to transition easily and unrestricted from the outside of the home to the inside. This webinar replay will focus on the key areas of concern in getting someone to the front door so they can gain entrance without issue.

Participants in this webinar replay will:

    • Discover that visitability is not limited to just the inside of the home
    • See that universal design is closely aligned with visitability
    • Appreciate that visitability applies to everyone who uses the property, including the occupants
